Research

The Research Department at Nammo Talley not only offers innovative ideas and technical test services in support of products supplied to the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries, but has extraordinary expertise in the formulation, characterization, and testing of modern propellants, pyrotechnics, and explosives. Our experience and capabilities are routinely applied in the understanding of a full range of propellant combustion and thermodynamic characteristics, and the resulting interaction with other system components. We are committed to offering the best in full-service testing, product development, and tailoring of existing products to meet customer needs.

Analytical Techniques

  • Gravimetric analysis (percent moisture, analyte concentration, physical separation schemes)
  • Electro-analytical (pH, ion-selective, Karl Fischer-moisture determination)
  • Titrimetric analysis (acid-base, potentiometric, standardization)
  • Spectroscopy (FTIR, IR)
  • Spectroscopy-atomic absorption (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, K, Na, Sn, Pb, W)
  • Gas Chromatography
  • Calorimetric/thermal analysis (Isoperibol Parr Bomb, DSC, TGA, etc.)
  • Digital Microscopy (acquisition and analysis of images in digital form)

Characterization Techniques

  • Instron universal testing (stress/strain, elongation, modulus)
  • Ballistic by Crawford and Acoustic Bomb (pressure, time, slope, burning rate, etc.)
  • Hazards testing (Impact, BAM Friction, ESD, card gap, #8 cap, etc.)
  • Standard DOT and DOD testing
  • Physical (density, specific gravity, melting point, refractive index, hardness)
  • Particle size (Malvern, Fischer sub-sieve, U.S.S.S. sieve analysis)
  • Rheological (viscosity, elastic and viscous modulus, shear measurements, creep recovery, etc.)

Airbag Testing

  • Gas analysis (FTIR, detector tube)
  • Airborne particulate (aerosol concentration, particle size by MOUDI)
  • Tank wash analysis (total and suspended solids)

Pyrotechnics and Explosives
Nammo Talley’s Research Department maintains its leadership in the science and technology of pyrotechnics and explosives used in propulsion systems, range extension, weapons systems, and automotive inflatable restraint systems. The unique capabilities of our Pyrotechnics and Explosives Group includes the ability to tailor existing composites to meet customer needs, as well as lab-scale wet and dry blending and pressing capabilities. Our chemists and technicians conceptualize, formulate, prepare, and test advanced explosives, gas generants and pyrotechnics.

Composite Propellants
Nammo Talley’s Research Department formulates and develops solid composite propellant for use in rocket propulsion, gas generators, ballistic devices used to support key missile systems. Our Composite Propellant Research Group continues to provide the high quality products, which have made Nammo Talley a leader in the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries.
